Move over, New York, L.A. and San Francisco. A recent report shows that unassuming cities farther from the coasts have real opportunities for new grads — and many of those jobs are in the booming field service industry.

Dayton, Ohio

Job search site ZipRecruiter studied major U.S. metropolitan areas — looking at number of jobs available, percent of available positions that require a bachelor’s degree, median cost of rent, and percent of 20- to 24-year-old residents — to determine the top 10 emerging cities for college grads. The takeaway? New grads might want to take a closer look at urban areas in the Midwest and the South.

“A lot of people have in their mind the ‘Rust Belt,’ the horrors of the ’80s recessions, but what we’re seeing now in the Midwest is they’re diversifying their economies. There’s more opportunities than there is on the coasts, less competition, and it’s cheaper,” Scott Garner, content marketing and communications manager at ZipRecruiter, tells Forbes.

We couldn’t help but notice how many of these cities support field-service related jobs across a range of industries, including healthcare and manufacturing. Here are a few standouts:

• Sioux Falls, S.D.: Sioux Falls tops the list, with affordable living at $815/month ($500 below the national average). New grads can choose from entry level jobs in a variety of fields, from sales to management and healthcare.
• Dayton, Ohio: Dayton has the lowest median rent of all 10 cities ($671/month) and ranked highly as a regional cultural hub, with an annual Blues Festival and a “bike-friendly” reputation. Field service technician positions are among the most plentiful entry-level jobs in the city.
• Jackson, Miss.: Jackson just might live up to its new moniker: “The Best of the New South.” The city stayed relatively unscathed in the recession and is home to a lively arts scene. It supports a range of successful industries, from agriculture to manufacturing, making it a hotbed for field service talent. Quality managers in manufacturing and IT solutions engineers rank among the most available positions.
