The updated Ranger 3 comes standard with rugged components. A VGA display allows for use in direct sunlight, and the mobile device is dust-proof, can be submerged in three feet of water for thirty minutes and is dust- and shock-resistant. Trimble also promises a long-life battery that lasts all day.

The Windows-based Ranger 3 contains 8 GB of memory and 3G and Wi-Fi connectivity, meaning techs can access the Internet. Bluetooth and GPS capabilities enable technicians to communication with other devices in the field. At 2.3 pounds — owing partly to the protective features, the device is heavier than other devices on the market, including the previous generation Trimble Ranger, writes Conrad Blickenstorfer for Rugged PC Review.

Trimble, which  specializes in ruggedized devices for the field, will release the Trimble Ranger 3 Series in February 2011.
